How do Google Shopping ads work for online stores in the Gulf?

7 min read Updated

Most Gulf store owners pour everything into Meta, TikTok and Snapchat — channels that create demand — and leave Google Shopping, the channel that captures it, almost untouched. Meanwhile, someone in Riyadh is typing the exact product you sell into Google right now, seeing a competitor's image, price and store name at the top of the results. If you run a Salla, Zid or Shopify store and your feed is not live, that sale was decided before you knew the search happened.

This guide walks through the full setup: getting Merchant Center connected and approved, building a feed that performs in Arabic, choosing between Standard Shopping and Performance Max, catching the brand-cannibalization trap that inflates ROAS, and the budget and scaling rules that keep the channel profitable.

Why Google Shopping is the channel Gulf stores underrate

Social ads interrupt people who were not shopping; Shopping ads answer people who are. A search like 'مكينة قهوة ديلونجي' or 'abaya online Riyadh' carries purchase intent no interest-targeting can match, which is why Shopping is usually the highest-ROAS line in a well-run account. It will rarely match TikTok's volume — search demand is finite — but it converts at a fraction of the cost per order.

There is a defensive reason too: if you do not run Shopping and branded Search, competitors can bid on your brand name and appear above your own store. For any store with real brand searches — and every store running social ads generates them — showing up on Google is not optional; it is protecting demand you already paid to create.

How do you set up Google Merchant Center with an Arabic feed?

Merchant Center is the bridge between your store and Google: it holds your product feed, and every Shopping ad is built from it. On Shopify, use the native Google channel; on Salla and Zid, use the Google Merchant Center integrations in their app stores — both generate and sync the feed automatically. Then claim and verify your domain, set shipping costs and delivery times per country, and submit.

Approval is where most Gulf stores stall. The usual culprits: the feed price not matching the on-page price (currency or VAT mismatch), missing shipping settings, no return policy page, or generic one-word titles. Fix the feed before touching campaigns — feed quality decides which searches you appear for, far more than bids do.

For Arabic performance, write titles the way shoppers search, not the way your catalog is labeled:

  • Title formula: product type + brand + key attribute — 'عطر رجالي توم فورد نوار ١٠٠ مل' beats 'نوار — توم فورد'.
  • Put the highest-intent words first; Google truncates long titles in the ad.
  • Use real product identifiers (GTIN/barcode) where they exist; mark identifier_exists false only for genuinely unbranded goods.
  • White-background main image, no logos or promo text overlaid — overlay text is a disapproval magnet.
  • If you sell in both Arabic and English, keep the feed language matched to the landing page language Google sees — mixed-language feeds get weaker matching, not double coverage.

Standard Shopping or Performance Max for an online store?

Start with Standard Shopping if the account is new. It shows you the actual search terms triggering your products, lets you set bids per product group, and lets you add negatives — control you will miss badly while learning. Run it two to four weeks and prune: exclude irrelevant queries, cut products that get clicks but never sell, and note which categories carry the account.

Performance Max earns its place once you have volume — as a working rule, thirty or more conversions a month and a clean feed. It extends your products beyond Shopping placements into YouTube, Gmail, Display and Discover, and its automation genuinely finds incremental buyers when it has enough signal. With thin data it sprays budget across placements you cannot see, and reports it all as success.

The decision rule: Standard Shopping to learn, Performance Max to scale. Many healthy Gulf accounts keep both — Standard Shopping on new or low-data products, PMax on proven bestsellers with target-ROAS goals.

When does Performance Max cannibalize your sales — and how do you stop it?

The classic pattern: you launch PMax, its ROAS looks spectacular, yet total store sales barely move. What happened is that PMax swallowed your brand searches — people who typed your store's name and would have bought anyway — and claimed them as conversions. The dashboard improves; the business does not.

The fix is structural, not a bid tweak. Ask Google support to apply brand exclusion lists to your PMax campaigns (or add your brand as an account-level negative), and run a cheap dedicated brand Search campaign so you can see branded and non-branded performance separately. Then judge PMax on what is left: non-brand ROAS. If non-brand ROAS is above breakeven and total orders grow when you raise budget, PMax is genuinely working. If total orders stay flat while spend rises, you are buying your own customers.

What budget and results should a Gulf store expect from Google Ads?

You can test Shopping seriously from around 3,000–5,000 SAR a month in a single country — enough for the feed to gather impressions across your catalog and for clear winners to surface. Expect the first two weeks to run below target while data accumulates; judge the channel at week four, not day four.

Weekly operating rhythm: check search terms and add negatives, fix any new feed disapprovals the same week they appear, move budget toward product groups beating your target ROAS, and pause products with meaningful clicks and zero orders. Scale by raising budget roughly 20 percent at a time once ROAS has held target for two consecutive weeks — big jumps reset learning and usually cost more than they gain.

One honest caveat: Shopping scales with search demand, which is finite in Gulf niches. When impression share is already high and CPCs start climbing, the next order of growth comes from adding countries or feeding the top of the funnel on social — not from forcing more budget into the same searches.

How Ashayrah runs Google Shopping for your store

Feed, campaigns and measurement are one system — we run all three for Gulf stores so the numbers you scale on are real.

  1. The audit

We review your Merchant Center feed, current campaigns and tracking, and quantify two things most stores have never seen: how much of your 'Google ROAS' is your own brand name, and which searches you are invisible for. Free, and the findings are yours to keep.

  2. The launch

Within 14 days: feed rebuilt with Arabic titles that match real searches, disapprovals cleared, brand Search separated from Shopping, PMax structured with brand exclusions, and conversion tracking verified against your store's actual orders.

  3. The scale

Weekly pruning of search terms and products, budget moved to what beats target ROAS on non-brand traffic, and a plain-numbers report on cost per order and margin — not clicks.

Questions people also ask

Do Google Shopping ads work in Arabic?

Yes. Shopping ads match Arabic searches against your feed, so performance depends on feed language quality: Arabic titles and descriptions written the way shoppers search. Stores with English-only feeds routinely miss the majority of Gulf search demand, which happens in Arabic.

Can I run Google Shopping from a Salla or Zid store?

Yes. Both platforms have Google Merchant Center integrations in their app stores that generate and sync the product feed automatically, and Shopify has a native Google channel. You still need to verify your domain, set shipping settings, and clean up titles — the integration moves the data, it does not optimize it.

Is Performance Max better than Standard Shopping?

Neither is better universally. Standard Shopping gives control and search-term visibility, which new accounts need; Performance Max scales further once you have roughly thirty conversions a month and a clean feed. Most healthy accounts use Standard Shopping to learn and PMax to scale proven products — with brand traffic excluded from PMax.

Why is my Performance Max ROAS high but my sales flat?

Almost always brand cannibalization: PMax is capturing people who searched your store's name and would have bought anyway, then reporting them as ad-driven conversions. Apply brand exclusions, split brand into its own Search campaign, and re-judge PMax on non-brand ROAS and total order growth.

How much should a Gulf store budget for Google Shopping?

A serious test needs around 3,000–5,000 SAR a month in one country for at least four weeks. Below that, data trickles in too slowly to make decisions. Once non-brand ROAS holds above your breakeven for two weeks, raise budget about 20 percent at a time.
